Profile

I am a reporter! I recently graduated from Boston University with a B.S. in journalism. At BU, I was editor-in-chief of the student-run newspaper, The Daily Free Press. I also had an internship at The Boston Globe, and I still write for The Globe's Express Desk section today!

See my work below!

Controversy

In a suburb outside Boston, a Catholic Priest and members of his parish council replaced nativity figurines of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph with a sign that read: "ICE WAS HERE." The priest, Father Stephen Josoma, told me over the phone that ICE raids were the "complete antithesis" of Biblical values. Several members of the parish told me they agreed with the sentiment of the sign.

The Archdiocese Responds

Two days later, the spokesman for Boston's Archdiocese issued a statement condemning the display, and calling for its removal. In a text message, Josoma told me he would meet with his council before deciding his response. The Archdiocese owns the land under Josoma's church, and can, under canon law, remove priests from ministry.

A Bold Refusal

Josoma met with his council for two hours following Sunday Mass. After the meeting, which I waited out in the warm car of a very kind Wall Street Journal reporter, Josoma said a decision would be rendered Monday. On Monday, Josoma announced before assembled media that he would not remove the display without first speaking with the Archbishop. He graciously let me type up the first draft from inside his house next to the church.

A Meeting

A couple weeks passed, and I stayed in regular contact with the Archbishop's spokesman. On Christmas Eve, he let me know that Archbishop Henning was attending a charity event. I went to the event, and spoke exclusively with the Archbishop, who confirmed that he had agreed to meet with Josoma. (By the way, the correct way to address an Archbishop is "Your Eminence.")

Behind the story - Pride flag removals

The Removals

After spring break, multiple faculty members said that outward facing pride flags hung in their windows were removed by administration officials during the vacation. A BU spokesman said the flags violated BU's ban on outward-facing signs. The faculty members said pride flags were being unfairly targeted for removal.

BU Responds

A few days later, BU officials wrote an article in the university-run news site denying that the policy was only being enforced with politically sensitive signs. Administrators said the policy against outward-facing signs had been in place since 1982.

Historical Context

Yosef Abramowitz, a BU alum who in the 1980s went to court against BU after his signs protesting South African apartheid were removed, wrote a letter criticizing the pride flag removals. In 1986, a Massachusetts Superior Court judge ruled that BU violated Abramowitz's First Amendment rights and that the university could not remove the signs or force the students to remove signs.

Removals are Paused

Amid mounting pressure and growing national news coverage, President Gilliam  announced in an email that she was pausing the removal of outward-facing signs, including pride flags. In the email, she apologized to the LGBTQ+ community, writing that "our policies exist within a larger social context—one that is dynamic and complex."
